What is an Unusual Amazon Crop?
First we will talk about what makes these crops “unusual”. I have compiled this list off of crops that you can grow in your back yard that you do not see everyday.
Unusual crops make dinner dishes more interesting. Each crop may look unusual but they are similarly grown as the ones you typically see in the grocery store.
These crops specifically can be found on Amazon for an unusual harvest. Some have unusual colors and others have unusual shapes.
What is a Pet Friendly Crop?
If you have read my other articles before, you may have heard of a “pet safe plant”. It is definitely not the first time I have mentioned it.
If you are interested in finding out more about some plants that are toxic to pets, check out this article. In there I link to a comprehensive guide to pet toxic and pet safe plants that you can reference if needed.
There are many plants that are “pet friendly” but may not be fully pet safe. There is actually one in this article I will touch on. It is safe to give your pets corn, but it is not safe to give your pets a corn cob. We’ll touch more on that later when you see the very colorful corn!
The fact of the matter is, there are a ton of plants that you may want to have around that are toxic to pets but finding a way to keep them away from the plants is best, like with these pet safe planters. Check them out. You’ll thank me later!
If you ever believe that your pet ingested a toxic plant, reach out to your veterinarian. I know I am a broken record with this but it would also benefit you, your pet and your wallet to consider pet insurance.
8 Unusual Crops You Can Get Off Amazon
I went through Amazon and looked through their crops to find the most unusual crops I saw. It is always best to consider your zone before buying seeds and your available space.
Blue Jarrahdale Pumpkin Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
If you are looking for a spooky unusual looking pumpkin for Halloween season, this pumpkin is right for you.
The outside is a rare blue color and the inside is orange. Cut this pumpkin open and put a smoker inside or some dry ice to make a spooky smoking pumpkin that gives a chilling effect.
You can even line your walk way with them for the full effect when kids walk up to your door.
The seller claims that the pumpkin patch has a good yield that is backed by the comments so you may get more than enough to decorate more than one area of your spooky chilling decor. Isn’t that exactly what Halloween is about?
Tigger Melon Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
These melons are a rare color and size for melons. Do not be deceived by the picture. These melons are small in size but grow extremely quickly, even backed by the comments.
Per the seller it only takes 60-70 days from seed to harvest. That’s fast!
The seller claims that the melons are sweet in flavor much like other melons.
The melons grow with an unusual orange striped color and the inside is a pale beige.
African Horned Cucumber Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
The claim on these “melons” is that they are quick growing and taste like ripe honey dew.
Some comments have expressed small amount of germination but luckily the buyer seems to have a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.
The plant does well on a trellis and can be planted close together which makes these perfect for small gardens. This unusual crop could really bring some interest to any dish or table.
This could be a perfect addition to a Hawaiian themed party. It really reminds me of the tropics.
Tongue of Fire Bean Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
These beans you may need to test your skills (or luck on). Many reviews claim that there is no germination from the seeds but some have had success.
The seller states that this unusual crop can be grown well in containers which makes it perfect for small space gardening or as a pop of color in a decorative pot.
Keep into consideration that these are bush beans so a trellis is not needed.
Scarlet Runner Bean Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
If you are looking for a unique bean with a better standing to grow some beans, this bean may be the right one for you.
Amazon reviews rave about the beautiful flowers this unusual crop produces. For a pop of color in your dishes, you can split the pods open and add the beans to your dishes separately.
The flowers are even edible on this crop which brings this trellised bean up in ratings to many. Some have also stated that they taste great!
Glass Gem Corn Seeds
(Star Rating Based on Amazon Reviews)
These colorful corn ears can add a unique flair to any barbeque. Lots of reviewers have states that they have been happy with the germination and growth.
This is a crop that should be considered carefully when you have dogs or other pets who may want to ingest your crop. Although corn can be ingested by pets, the cob can cause a blockage in your pets.
If you think your pet (dog especially) may take your corn right off the stalk and eat it, it would be best to keep a barrier around it to prevent any potential for harm to your pet.
Conclusion
In conclusion, bringing unusual crops to your garden brings color and excitement to your table.
Always consider your location and your amount of space before growing crops and consider your pets when you build your growing area.
